ABOUT OSUN
STATE
Osun State was one of the nine states created by the Federal
Military government on August 27, 1991. The State was carved
out of the old Oyo State.
GEOGRAPHY
Osun State covers an area of approximately 8, 602 square
kilometers. It shares boundaries with Oyo in the west, Ekiti
and Ondo states in the East, Kwara in the North and Ogun
in the South. The state lies within the tropical rain forest
region with thick, deciduous vegetation in the southern
part and grassland towards the North.
LOCAL
GOVERNMENTS:
The State at its take-off had 22 local Government Areas.
But with the creation of additional local governments in
the country in September, 1991 and 1996, Osun State has
30 local governments’ councils.
HISTORY
AND CULTURE OF THE PEOPLE
Ile-Ife is the reserve cradle of the Yoruba civilization.
Ile-Ife means much to all because it is believed to be the
origin if the Yorubas (being the seat of Oduduwa, the spiritual
father of the Yorubas). It is the spiritual home of all
Yorubas.
The
art of the people of Osun state is closely linked with their
traditional religion. Like most African people, they have
strong believe in the existence of an Almighty God whom
they call Olorun (Lord of Heaven). Some of them even worship
gods such as Sango (the god of thunder), Ogun (god of Iron).
Etc.
Prominent
among festivals observed annually are Osun-Osogbo, Olojo
in Ile-Ife, Obalogun (Ilesa) Agba in Oyan, Sango in Ede,
Orisa Ogiyan in Ejigbo and Aworo-ose in Ila-Orangun. |

TOURIST
ATTRACTIONS
Some of the reputable tourist centres in the State are Osun
shrine and Groove, International Tourist Centre (Osogbo),
Olumirinrin Water falls (Erin Ijesha) Ife Museums (Ile Ife)
Timi Agbale Gardens (Ede) Oke-Maria (Otan Ayegbaju) the mysterious
footsteps (Esa-Oke) Mysterious cave (Imesi-Ile) and Kiriji
Memorial Battle Field (Igbajo), Mic-Com Golf Course Country
Home Club, an eighteen hole golf course and Hotel at Ada,
a few kilometre from Osogbo. |

POPULATION
Osun State according to 1991 Census figure, has a population
of 2,203,016. The breakdown of the figure shows there were
1,079,424 males and 1,123,592.
NATURAL
RESOURCES
Osun State is blessed with vast mineral resources. These
include Gold, Clay,Limestone, Kaolin and Granite
TERTIARY
INSTITUTIONS
The State has two college of Education, a Polytechnic, a
College of Technology and a Federal Polytechnic. On University
education, the state has a Federal University and jointly
owns the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology with the
Oyo State government. There is Bowen University at Iwo owned
by Baptist Church.
INFRASTRUCTURE
The state has some Federal presence in addition to thousands
of kilometres of motorable roads. Osogbo, the National Electric
Power Authority. In addition, a rail line which is expected
in the state Capital.
JUDICIARY
Presently, there are 15 High Courts of Justice in the State.
The seven judicial division in Osun State include Osogbo,
Ilesha, Ife, Iwo, Ila-Orangun, Ejigbo and Ikirun.
